The Andaman Sea near Phuket offers some of the best scuba diving in the world. As you go cruising in Shark Point waters between the Phi Phi Islands and the coast of Phuket, you have the opportunity to dive on three intriguing underwater sites known for their beauty and abundant marine life. The first is Shark Point, named for the 8-foot docile leopard sharks that thrive around the three rock pinnacles, two of which are completely submerged and one that barely breaks the surface of the water. Nurse and reef sharks are also common, as are whale sharks in February and March. Lionfish, scorpionfish, pufferfish, anglefish, potato groupers, and moray eels swim among the purple and pink coral, giant barrel sponges, and sea fans. Water depths at the dive site range from 16 to 72 feet, and visibility ranges from 16 to 60 feet. The best visibility is between November and April. Water temperature averages 86°F (30°C). This site is rated for divers at the intermediate level. Moorings are available, but this is a day stop only.
About half a mile to the north of Shark Point is Anemone Reef, where the scuba diving over colorful purple corals and giant sea fans is also impressive. In May 1997, the 278-foot King Cruiser ferry hit the reef and sank about one mile to the east. The ship was a catamaran design with four decks, and it’s still largely intact, making a home for tropical fish and coral formations.
