Cruising in Stonehaven waters entails a sojourn to rugged Hook Island aboard your luxury Powercat. From the air the island really does look a bit like a three-fingered hook, and it’s a great place to swim, snorkel, and scuba dive, especially at the Mantaray Bay special management area at the north end which offers some of the most marvelous underwater vistas in all of the Whitsundays. Fringing reefs of the Great Barrier Reef run along the northern shore, and they are rich in diverse corals and colorful tropical fish. You may get the impression that the fish are quite friendly, but they are merely curious about you since they seem to know they’re safe in this area where fishing isn’t permitted. The beaches on Hook Island, most of which is part of the national park system, are beautiful and serene. A Hamilton Island powerboat charter wouldn’t be complete without Stonehaven cruising around Hook Island.
Moorings are available, but get there early! There is ample room to anchor at Stonehaven.
Dinghy dockage: No dinghy dockage is available.
One of the key attractions of Hook Island is its great snorkeling and scuba diving in and around Stonehaven. At the Mantaray Bay special management area, it’s even better, where you can pick up a mooring and swim in to view the exquisite beauty under the Coral Sea. No anchoring is permitted in Mantaray Bay. There are numerous beaches and walking paths on Hook Island. The views from some of the paths are breathtaking. Hook Island is also home to an underwater observatory. You can walk down nearly 30 feet below the water’s surface to admire the reef system, and marine biologists are usually on hand to provide fascinating facts about the reef system.
No facilities for yachts are available.
