Cruising in Whitehaven Beach waters brings you to the southeast coast of beautiful Whitsunday Island and one of the most famous beaches in the entire world. The snow white, soft sand stretches for about five miles along the shore, and scientists think it got there in an interesting way. The sand at Whitehaven is almost 100-percent pure silica, tiny particles of quartz. The theory is that these particles were (and are) carried in suspension by the tidal currents along the Queensland Coast and dropped at Whitehaven due to the effects of eddies. What is certain is that the rocks in the Whitsundays don’t contain all that much quartz, so the sand isn’t native to the area. The purity of the sand is such that it would be ideal for glassmaking! Whitehaven yachting is a must during any Hamilton Island powerboat charter.
No moorings are available. Anchor off the beach. Consider a more sheltered overnight anchorage for a comfortable rest if the wind is from the east.
Dinghy dockage: No dinghy dockage is available.
Hill Inlet at the north end of the beach is a picturesque cove where the tide mixes sand held in suspension in the aquamarine water to create a rainbow of gorgeous colors that change by the moment as you watch. There’s a footpath that takes you up the hill to a scenic overlook of breathtaking beauty. Obviously, swimming and sunbathing is the main attraction at Whitehaven Beach.
No facilities for yachts are available.
