Corfu’s dazzling history shines brightly wherever you look, from ancient ruins to museums and churches. Having been inhabited since the Stone Age and Corfu Old Town enjoying a history dating back as far as 8th century BC, the island has been influenced by a wide range of people, cultures and other countries.
One of the most historically significant periods for Corfu was the 400 years the island spent under Venetian rule. During this time, many of the Ionian Islands were also under Venetian rule and the Greek islands became somewhat of a trading center. This era left a huge mark on Corfu, with a large number of incredible buildings and monuments being constructed with symbolically Venetian architecture, many still standing today.

Greek mythology has also had a significant influence on Corfu. According to myth, the island gets its name from the Nymph Korkira, whom Poseidon fell in love with, kidnapped and brought to Corfu. Most notably, however, it is Corfu’s relation to Homer’s Odyssey that ties in with Greek mythology. Scholars have identified Corfu to be Scheria, the land of the Phaeacians from the epic poem, famously the last stop of Odysseus’ journey before his return to Ithaca.
