Belize is a small country in northern Central America just a bit larger than the U.S. state of Massachusetts. To the north is Mexico and to the west is Guatemala. The western Caribbean fronts the rest of Belize.
Climate
Belize is subtropical, with a mean annual temperature of 80 degrees F. Winter storms may bring the temperature down to the low '60's; it can reach the mid-90's on the mainland in the hottest part of summer. Trade winds blow along the coast and on the cayes most of the year, keeping temperatures pleasant even in the hottest months, except for a few weeks, generally around mid-August through mid-September. The dry season generally lasts from November through May; the rainy season is typically June-November. Hurricanes occasionally occur; they are most likely to hit in August and September. Rainfall is heaviest in the south and the jungle areas, lightest in the north and on the Cayes. Water temperature averages between 79 and 83 degrees F. Sailing Conditions
Sailing conditions are ideal - the trade winds are a consistent 10 to 20 knots. Most sailing is done inside the main barrier reef, providing both excellent shelter and amazing scenery.
Waves inside the barrier reef are minimal, but the breeze is fresh creating superb sailing conditions. Outside the barrier reef in the blue water, Turneffe Islands and Glover's atolls are each a half day's sail away and Lighthouse Reef can be reached in another half day sail. Cayes is close enough together to island hop, pristine water, solitary anchorages, sunny days and starry nights typifies sailing in Belize.
The barrier reef extends from the Mexican border to the Sapodilla Cayes, 130 miles of sun-swept cayes and coral reef that offers exciting snorkeling for both the novice and the more experienced. There are roughly 500 cayes along the reef line, many uninhabited. The reef is teaming with fish, coral, and creatures. The coral forms colorful, surreal landscapes with jutting heads, sand bottom canyons, arches and spires.
