Powerboat Phuket, Thailand

In Southeast Asia, the emerald-colored waters of Phang-nga Bay and the Andaman Sea shimmer in tropical sunlight along the east coast of Phuket, Thailand. It's an exotic place, with towering limestone pinnacles jutting from the sea, cave-like rock enclosures open to the stars that the Thai people call hongs (rooms), and white-sand beaches of unparalleled beauty.

Itinerary

A Phuket powerboat itinerary ushers you into an exotic cruising ground famous throughout the world for its breathtaking beauty. The natural wonders include pillars of stone amid the emerald-colored waters of Phang-nga Bay, countless uninhabited isles with scenic anchorages, expansive white-sand beaches in the province of Krabi, and boundless coral reefs resplendent with rainbows of color shimmering in the crystal clear waters. Island and coastal resorts, historic Phuket Town, and traditional fishing villages at your ports of call add to the appeal of a luxury yacht charter in Thailand. The standard Phuket powerboat itinerary generally encompasses the sheltered waters of Phang-nga Bay, the Krabi coast, and the Phi Phi Islands (see Phuket yachting maps). Extended itineraries during the northeast monsoon season – November through October – can also take you to the Similan and Surin islands, one of the world’s top-rated scuba diving sites.

Day 1, Koh Hong

Phuket to Koh Hong – 11.5 miles. Set off at 4:00 P.M. on your luxury powered catamaran from the Moorings Power base at Ao Po Marina to begin the first adventures of your Phuket powerboat itinerary. Your course takes you north, deep into the Ao Phang-nga Bay National Park known for its beautiful emerald-colored waters and remarkable limestone pillars and open-air caves, or as the Thai people call them, hongs, which means room. As you cruise along and admire the stunning views from the spacious flybridge of your Powercat, it seems as if the cares of the world diminish with every mile. When you reach the overnight anchorage at the scenic Koh Hong group of islands, you drop the hook between towering limestone pinnacles and then enjoy a refreshing swim. Take the dinghy to explore the tunnel leading into the enclosed lagoon, an impressive sight by any standards.

Day 2, Koh Hong Krabi

Koh Hong to Koh Hong Krabi – 23 miles. The first full day of your Phuket powerboat itinerary takes you west across Phang-nga Bay, with Yao Noi Island off the starboard bow. Off to port is the head of the bay and numerous uninhabited tropical islands remarkably unchanged by the modern world. Once past Koh Yao Noi, turn southward for a beautiful cruise to the Koh Hong Krabi archipelago, where you have a choice of several anchorages in these remote islands. There’s a splendid beach at Koh Hong Krabi and a coral reef ideal for snorkeling. Fishing is another option. Jackfish, Spanish mackerel, and rainbow runners are abundant in these crystal clear waters.

Day 3, Rai Le Beach

Koh Hong Krabi to Rai Le Beach – 11.5 miles. The mainland coast of Krabi lies to the west of Koh Hong Krabi and is world-famous for its splendid beaches and secluded bays with access only available by boat. Longtails, narrow, traditional craft indigenous to the region, bring in supplies for the resorts and beachside restaurants and bars. Cruising in these waters is a sheer delight, boasting breathtaking scenery everywhere you look. Rai Le Beach is the next stop on your Phuket powerboat itinerary, one of the best in the entire area. Coconut palms line the sandy shores, and there are pleasant bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a good meal and a refreshing cocktail. The snorkeling is superb on the coral reef just offshore.

Day 4, Koh Phi Phi Don

Rai Le Beach to Koh Phi Phi Don – 17 miles. The Phi Phi Islands are known for their exquisite beauty and the lively village perched along the shore of Ton Sai Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don. There is much to do, ranging from snorkeling and swimming to taking a guided scuba diving tour of the nearby reef system. The passage south from coastal Krabi takes you out into the open waters of the shimmering Andaman Sea, a great chance to throttle up the twin engines of your luxury Powercat and get into the groove at cruising speed as you drive farther into tropical paradise. The best anchorage is at Ton Sai Bay, where you can enjoy a swim, snorkel, and then head ashore for some evening fun at the bars.

Day 5, Phi Phi Islands

Lay day – 0 nm. The Phi Phi Islands are so gorgeous it’s well worth spending a full day of your Phuket powerboat itinerary to see the sights, especially Koh Phi Phi Le, a beautiful island with picturesque bays and coves. Of particular interest is Maya Bay, where the hit movie The Beach was filmed and released in 1999. Beautiful beaches, high cliffs, and a coral reef ideal for snorkeling make Maya Bay a very popular stop. While it’s possible to anchor there, the water is very deep. It’s far easier to take a longtail boat ride to Koh Phi Phi Le from Ton Sai Bay. Tours of the interesting caves on the island are also available.

Day 6, Koh Racha Yai

Koh Phi Phi Don to Koh Racha Yai – 32 miles. A cruise to the west takes you to the twins off Phuket, Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi. Both islands are interesting places to visit. For anglers the small bay on the west side of Koh Racha Noi is one of the best fishing sites in the area, and the snorkeling and scuba diving is great off Koh Racha Yai, especially on the eastern coast with abundant coral gardens and tropical fish. On the northwest side of Koh Racha Yai, you’ll find a beach of snow-white sand located in the sheltered, U-shaped bay of Ao Tawan Tok. There are some restaurants and bars ashore, where you can enjoy a good seafood dinner.

Day 7, Koh Rang Yai

Koh Racha Yai to Koh Rang Yai – 29 miles. From Koh Racha Yai, steer your luxury Powercat north back to Phuket’s east coast. The scenery remains breathtaking from the flybridge as you drive past the islands and the mangrove forests along the high hills on the shore that rise ever higher toward the interior. The Koh Rang group, a cluster of islets along a bight in the coast is the next destination on your Phuket powerboat itinerary. The anchorage at Koh Rang Yai is spectacular, and there is a restaurant ashore. You can also hike on walking paths and rent a mountain bike.

Final Morning
Koh Rang Yai to Phuket – 11.5 miles. Although you won’t want to cruise back to reality (you can always come visit Thailand again!), the final leg of your charter will take you on a short passage back to the Moorings Power base at Ao Po Marina. Please check in by 9:00 A.M.
