Cruising Conditions

General Conditions

  1. Between December & May – Winter Months
    The weather is stable with Northwesterly trade winds at 10 to 20 knots. The water temperature is about 30 °C, air temperature range from about 77 °F during the day to a cool of 60 °F in the evening. 
  2. Between June & November – Summer Months
    The weather is more unstable with normal winds between 5 and 10 knots The water is about 28 °C, air temperature range from about 75 °F to 95 °F.

Forecasts:

  1. The base provides client with a weather forecast for the first two days.
  2. There is a local net on VHF channel 22 at 8:00 am each morning that broadcasts the weather.
  3. Baja has dry weather with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year.

Dominant Winds:

  1. The "Norther" : North-North/West. Frequent from December to April is  
    caused by the Santa Ana Winds in California.
  2. The "Pineapple Express : South. February-March. High southern wind from Hawaii.
  3. The "Corumuel" : South-South/East. Frequent May through November. Low pressure. Strong wind in the late afternoon coming from the Pacific.
  4. "Chabascos" : July through October. Local low pressure fast moving high wind and rain, thunder and lightening storms.

Cruising Information

  1. Charterers can sail from La Paz north to Loreto.
  2. Boats are not allowed to sail south of La Paz. In general, the weather is predictable and sailing conditions favorable.
  3. Most charterers typically visit the following: from La Paz to Islas Espiritu Santo, Partida, San Jose and San Francisco.
  4. In Baja anchorages include San Evaristo, Nopolo, Bahia San Carlos (Timbabiche) and Puerto Los Gatos.

Tides

  1. Tides range from 2 - 8ft.
  2. Coastal currents are weak.
