US Virgin Islands

Is a US Virgin Islands sailing holiday right for you?

Ever wondered if a yacht charter in the tropical US Virgin Islands is right for you? There are many reasons this destination should be on your holiday bucket list and we’re confident we’ll be able to show you why.

With three beautiful islands to explore by land and sea including, Croix, St John and St Thomas, you won’t run out of things to see and do on your yacht charter.

While you’re on the water, you will enjoy some of the best snorkelling adventures in the world. The visibility is second to none, allowing you to catch sight of the huge range of marine life, from sea turtles to playful dolphins.

How you tackle this adventure is up to you, as The Moorings provides a range of options. For both our sail and power charters, you have the choice to cruise bareboat if you prefer the independence of taking the helm yourself or you can hire a skipper who will handle all of the navigating for you.

There are also fully crewed options where your onboard chef will dazzle you with fresh delights each day and your skipper will ensure your days are tailored to your every need. Whether you are more of a golfer than a fisherman, or just want to enjoy a new stunning view each day the US Virgin Islands has something for everyone.

US Virgin Islands

“My recent trip to the US Virgin Islands was breath-taking. It was a true slice of paradise with stunning pristine beaches, turquoise water and a welcoming greeting from everyone we met. I cannot recommend a charter to St Thomas enough!” – Kate Staniforth, Head of Marketing for The Moorings.

How to travel to the US Virgin Islands?

Whilst the islands will feel totally remote from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, luckily, St Thomas is relatively easy to reach. Wherever you are in the world, fly into the US mainland and either fly direct to St Thomas or connect in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airport is four miles southwest of the capital city, Charlotte Amalie, and a short taxi ride to the marina base.

When is the best time to visit the US Virgin Islands?

USVI Power Charter

The best time to visit will be determined by the sailing conditions you are looking for. From November to January the north-easterly winds average 15 to 20 knots, with The Christmas winds peaking at up to 30 knots. There is a shift of the winds to the east in February and by June the now south-easterly winds begin to weaken to 10 to 15 knots. By October, the trade winds are at their weakest, but the weather can be unpredictable from day to day. Temperatures average between 75°F and 88°F (24°C to 31°C).

Whether you choose to set sail on a classic monohull or a custom-built sail catamaran with modern features, for optimal live-aboard comfort, or glide the crystal-clear waters aboard a spacious, high performance power catamaran – designed to be fuel-efficient, fast, stable and stylish, you are sure to find a five-star experience to suit you. For the ultimate US Virgin Islands experience, a crewed charter includes an expert captain and personal gourmet chef. Sample a spectacular array of cocktails, delicacies and hors d’oeuvres from sunrise to sunset, all tailored to your personal preferences. Your professional skipper will make the most of any of the conditions, providing a mix of sheltered routes and open passages to make sure you get the full experience of cruising on offer.

What could you see and do?

Across our 7-day and 10-day itineraries, you will start by heading out to Christmas Cove, just off St Thomas’ eastern coast. The crystal-clear waters mean there is a good chance you will spot stingrays and sea turtles beneath the waves and makes this secluded spot a must-visit. You will then spend a few days diving in and out of the north coast of St John, home to the Virgin Islands National Park.

Take your dinghy out to explore and snorkel in Caneel Bay, Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay. Just make sure to bring your camera to capture the luscious green vegetation and diamond blue sea. You will be welcomed by a number of local restaurants and cabanas, serving relaxed cocktails and native delicacies. In Leinster and Coral Bay, the sea grass and coral reefs provide a home for different marine wildlife, including colourful fish and even dolphins that will swim alongside your yacht.

On the 10-day itinerary, you’ll then head out to Great & Little Lameshur, to the south, which provides a stunning three mile hike with some of the oldest (and largest) trees on all of the islands. On day 7 you will get the unique opportunity to cruise north to the Lavango and Congo Islands. Don’t miss Carvel Rock, an uninhabited island which stands alone to the East of Lavango and is a fantastic swimming spot.

On day 6 of the shorter itinerary or day 8 of the longer holiday, you will be back on St Thomas. Magens Bay is a great spot to get out on a kayak or paddleboard. Named as one of the top 10 beaches in the world by National Geographic, you will have to visit to see why.

Onshore, enjoy a banana daiquiri under a palm tree or venture along the Discovery Nature Trail to find coconuts and mangroves in the arboretum.

There is plenty of rich culture to explore too. Druif Bay, the last stop on both itineraries, is home to Fort Segarra, an underground fort built by the U.S. during World War II. Sugar mills and plantations dot the islands along with architecture such as the Emmaus Moravian Church, which is said to have been haunted since the 1700s.

What should I pack?

We always recommend being prepared for a range of weather and having the appropriate clothing for the different activities on offer (even if you think something is not for you, you might change your mind when you are here!) Below we have included some essentials for your packing-list:
