When is the best time to sail the Seychelles?

How easy is it to island hop in the Seychelles?

During your Seychelles yacht charter, passages combine a mix of open-water cruising in fair winds and short hops between adjacent islands for snorkeling and scuba diving on the coral reefs, or simply relaxing on one of the many white-sand beaches.

Cruising between islands couldn’t be easier than in the Seychelles, especially when you follow one of our specially created itineraries. You can also leave the island hopping to one of our experienced skippers who can guide you around the islands and share their expertise with you.

How many days in the Seychelles is enough?

Much like all our destinations in the Exotics, Americas, Mediterranean and Caribbean, you have the freedom to choose how long you want to spend roaming around the Indian Ocean. When planning your Seychelles yacht charter, consider how much time you want to spend unwinding and relaxing, as well as how many fantastic excursions you want to go on.

If you want to enjoy the perfect blend of sunbathing on beaches and exploring secluded bays, coves and islands, our 7-day itinerary has the best of both worlds.

What are the best things to do in the Seychelles?
  • Visit Vallée de Mai, one of the world’s smallest natural world heritage sites. The oldest trees in the “Vallée de Mai” are around 800 years old. The valley forms the heart of the Praslin National Park and is home to the famous and magnificent Coco de Mer Palm.
  • Enjoy a day of surfing Grand Anse on the western coast of Mahé, try windsurfing for the first time in Victoria, or enjoy a spot of wakeboarding at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Beach Resort. If you love spending time in the water, take a look at the watersports options available during your Seychelles yacht charter.
  • Uncover the underwater treasures of the Seychelles with a day of scuba diving fun. The loveliest underwater landscapes are around Mahé and the surrounding islands. The sculptured rocks are covered with soft coral and sponges. Large numbers of fish are found almost everywhere. It is also possible to dive to some of the many wrecks.*
  • Explore Victoria’s interesting museums and learn about the history of the Seychelles at the National Museum on Independence Avenue, the History Museum on State House Avenue and both the National Library and National Archives on Francis Rachel Street.
  • Seychelles waters are a paradise for game fishing. The flats near St. Francoise and Alphonse have recently been recognized as probably the best saltwater fly fishing area in the world.**
  • Visit some of the most outstanding beaches in the world, including Beau Vallon, Anse Intendance, Anse Royale and Anse Takamaka on Mahé; Cote D’Or and Anse Lazio on Praslin; and Anse La Source d’Argent, Grand Anse and Petit Anse on La Digue.

*Scuba diving is strictly regulated in Seychelles. Diving is only with a registered diving club and dive master. Underwater fishing is forbidden when scuba diving and with the use of spear guns. It is also forbidden to collect shells and coral.

**We offer high quality saltwater combos (30-50 KG Penn “Tuna Stick” mounted with a Shimano “Tyrnos II LRS” reel, fitted with 200m of 110Lbs line, 1 lure and no fishing belt) for 100 EUR /1 week, or 15 EUR/DAY, that may be rented on site or booked in advance when booking online or over the phone.

What is the weather like in the Seychelles?

In the Seychelles, weather is constantly changing. Neither rain nor sun ever become set for long periods. The archipelago, which rarely experiences really strong winds, is under the influence of a highly distinctive system consisting of two monsoons separated by a month of variable weather: the inter season.

From May to October, almost constant winds blow south-easterly with clear skies. The winds drop in November and give way to north-westerly’s winds, bringing heavy rain clouds.

You’ll find the heaviest rainfall in January which can reach 370mm/4.5 in.

The south-easterly wind pattern returns in April. In between these two periods there are two short periods of flat calms or light winds. April and May are the sunniest months; however, the cloudiest months still manage a daily average of 5.30 hours of sun.

These slight climate changes barely affect the temperature which remains at a steady 28°- 30°C (82°-86°F) and the level of humidity which is close to 80% all year around.

What are the tides like in the Seychelles?

Tides are semidiurnal and asymmetrical in the Seychelles, with a gap of about 6 hours between high tide and low tide. The tidal range is as low as 1.80m at spring tides and 1.40m at neap tides.

The tides also give rise to currents which can be quite strong in the straits between the islands or in the channel leading to lagoons, which may empty completely at low tide.

There can be quite considerable differences in height between the two daily high tides. On your yacht, whether you choose a sailing catamaran, monohull or power catamaran, you will find a tide table for your reference.

The entire Seychelles area is also subject to currents that develop with the monsoon. The NW monsoon gives rise to a current to the East from December to April. Its average speed is 1.5 Knots, though speeds of 4 knots have been recorded locally.

In April the current reverses. From June to September, currents flow westwards at a regular rate of 1.2 Knots but passages through flats can increase the speed to approximately 4 Knots. The return to currents flowing east takes place in December.

What is it like to sail a yacht in the Seychelles?

The Seychelles are situated in a balmy, relatively calm swath of the Indian Ocean covering approximately 150,000 square miles, though a Seychelles charter vacation focuses on the main Inner Islands, all of which are close together, making for easy passages between them.

In this part of the world, the annual monsoon influences the weather and wind directions. The northwest monsoon begins in November, ushering in northwesterly winds and more rain than typically falls from May through October, when the winds shift more to the southeast beginning in April. Regardless of the season, wind velocities average 10 to 20 knots, and the temperature ranges from 82°F to 86°F, so you can expect to experience beautifully warm weather during your Seychelles yacht charter, along with access to some of the best beaches in the Seychelles.

Wind-driven currents switch direction with the seasonal winds and are typically just over one knot. However, in certain locations, such as in narrow channels between islands, the current can be much stronger. The tidal range runs from 4.5 to 5.9 feet. Like the wind-driven currents, tidal currents can be swift in narrow channels. To help you prepare for your Seychelles sailing vacation, learn more about the cruising conditions you can expect to find as you explore these beautiful islands.

Why Charter a Yacht in Mahé?

A Seychelles yacht charter unfolds in an exotic, less-traveled part of the world, which is what makes cruising the Seychelles so appealing. Arab traders first sailed to the Seychelles around 800 A.D. Phoenician, Polynesian, Chinese, and European explorers followed, but it wasn’t until the 1700s that French colonists settled on the larger islands. Today, the population of the entire country numbers only 84,000, and it represents a rich commingling of French, British, Indian, Middle Eastern, and African culture, making it one of the most unique destinations for a sailing charter.

Small, secluded coves fringed with majestic palms set back from pristine white-sand beaches indent many of the islands, and just offshore are coral reefs resplendent in hues of brown, orange, green, and blue.

Half of the Seychelles is set aside as a natural preserve to protect the rare birds, such as the Seychelles bulbul, black parrot, and fruit pigeon, as well as giant tortoises that live nowhere else but in the Pacific’s Galapagos Islands. The plant life is varied too, from the coco-de-mer palms with huge double coconuts to the pitcher plants, gardenias, and orchids that grow on the mountain slopes.
