Best time to go to the British Virgin Islands
The BVI is the ideal Winter sun destination for people looking to escape the cold, dark, rainy days of January and February. If you’ve always dreamed of spending Christmas on the beach, the BVI’s peak season means you’ll swap roasting chestnuts on open fires for snorkeling in turquoise waters.
When you’re planning your BVI charter, there are several seasons you need to be aware as they may affect your decision as to when to visit the British Virgin Islands:
Dry Season – This is also referred to as the peak season, which is generally considered the best time to visit the BVI. During this time, temperatures can top 81.5°F and you can expect an average of 52 mm rainfall per month, making it hot, dry and the perfect weather for exploring uninhabited islands. This is also when the sailing season takes place which means you’ll have the opportunity to experience world-renowned racing events such as the BVI Spring Regatta.
Wet Season – May-November is known as the wet season in the BVI, where you’ll experience higher levels of humidity and rainfall. The wettest months are usually September, October and November, with an average of 174 mm per month.
Hurricane Season – Within the wet season, the BVI also experiences a hurricane season, which officially lasts between June-November. The most common time for hurricanes, or tropical storms is between August-October, so consider this carefully when booking your sailing vacation. You need to take extra safety precautions if you’re planning on traveling during the hurricane season. Check out the ‘useful information’ page for the BVI to learn more about health and safety during your charter.
Best time to sail the BVI outside of the highest season
While December-April is considered the best time to go to the BVI, if you’re looking for a thrilling yacht charter experience outside of the peak season, you still have several amazing options.
As the BVI boasts year-around sunshine, warm weather and incredible sailing conditions, you could choose to visit during the wet season. You need to consider this option carefully, especially if you plan to book during the hurricane season as you could face extreme weather conditions.
Another option is to visit at either end of the peak season, between November-December or April-May.
Why is this the best time to sail in the BVI outside the high season?
The most popular time to visit the BVI is March because families flock to these sensational islands for Spring Break. By visiting outside of this time, you’re likely to experience fewer crowds and enjoy quiet, serene beaches.
Particularly if you book in November or May, you’re likely to pay less as you’re avoiding the peak season.
You’ll still benefit from all the magic of the peak season, from sizzling temperatures to warm waters and calm sailing conditions.
Are you looking for the ultimate party vacation? Booking your BVI yacht charter in July means you may have the unique opportunity to experience Christmas in July, an annual event that takes place in the BVI. It also means you’re avoiding the peak season, although there’ll be just as much fun, food, dancing, drinking and sailing. Learn more about Christmas in July.

Three generations of our family gathered in Tortola to cruise the beautiful British Virgin Islands. All ages loved the adventure, especially the kids, (all new to sailing, ranging in age from 6 to 14. They were enthralled with their ‘fishing’ attempts! We had an excellent skipper, Gilson, who made the trip even better. We lucked out with wonderful weather, in spite of it being hurricane season. Hope to go again next year!
