Why charter a yacht in the BVI?
Location may not be everything but in the British Virgin Islands, it’s what makes cruising so pleasurable. With its stretch of islands in the northeastern part of the Caribbean, charter guests can expect beautiful blue waters flowing into shaded caves and onto soft-sand beaches. Whether you’re on a romantic vacation, family adventure or celebrating something special like a birthday, when you cast off from our base in Tortola, you’ll be saying hello to true paradise.
For the explorers among us, coral reefs surround the coast in an array of colors and are home to just as colorful marine life. The coral atoll of Anegada is the resting point of many a sunken ship and offers amazing underwater views for diving. If you’re looking for a more laid-back vacation, further inland bars, shops and restaurants spill through the winding streets and timeless villages are filled with the famous island ambiance. No matter your idea of a good time, a BVI sailing vacation has something for everyone.
The BVI is also one of the best places to enjoy a sailing vacation if you’re a fan of history. With inhabitants settling as far back as 2,300 years, the history of the BVI features pirates, Dutch settlers and hurricanes. There are plenty of places to soak up history on our BVI itinerary, including the ruins of St Michael’s Church and Fort Charlotte.

How easy is it to island hop in the BVI?

On your BVI yacht charter, you can spend days relaxing on the golden sands and snorkeling in the turquoise waters, whilst still having enough time to sail around the islands and moor up to explore!
How many days in the BVI is enough?
It depends on how much of the British Virgin Islands you want to explore during your idyllic yacht charter as to how many days is enough. If you want to uncover the treasures of each of the BVI’s main islands, you may choose to book for longer than if you’re planning on staying mostly within the Sir Francis Drake Channel for most of your charter.
We think a week is a great amount of time to sail around the BVI because you have plenty of time to relax and unwind, while also being able to enjoy the adventure of visiting different islands.

We had the trip of a lifetime. Captain Theo and Chef/First Mate Martina made this perhaps the most memorable vacation of our lives! The boat was perfect, the service was impeccable, the food amazing, and the experience was just fantastic. We loved getting to experience all of the BVIs in only 6 nights! Theo and Martina customized our itinerary each night for the following day and new exactly how to cater towards our desires – a mix of sailing, relaxing, swimming, island hopping and exploring. 10/10 5+ stars!!!
What an amazing trip! We chartered the Knotty Toddy with Richard and Shelley as crew. The sail was spectacular. The boat was spotless and the greeting from the crew was warm and welcoming. I would give Shelley a Michelin star for the quality of the food she prepared. Off the charts. Captain Richard knows the BVI’s like the back of his hand so we always moored in the perfect spots and saw the best sunsets. I highly recommend sailing with The Moorings and especially with Richard and Shelley as crew.
My husband and I went to the BVI’s for the first time with 5 other people and bare-boated for 10 days. The Moorings Marina facilities were clean; staff friendly and helpful. We were assigned The White Pearl — a pretty 45′ sail cat, ready on time, spotlessly clean and spacious — elicited excited WOW’s”! Check-in and provisioning went smoothly. The Riteway grocery store was a short walk away to pick up fresh fruit, veggies, bread, cheese and wine (note: buy an extra roll of paper towel for ‘clean ups’). The briefing person noticed the helm wheel was a bit stiff and oiled it up before we departed. Microwave needs to be secured — went flying off the shelf when we were sailing. Water-maker didn’t work (we managed by rationing fresh water), however, the generator, engines, rigging, sails, dinghy and nav gear all in functioning order. Could have used a few more than two tea towels in the kitchen and two personal towels each for a 10-day tour. Overall, would recommend – a magical experience, a few bruises and big grins!
Our 7 – night Crewed Sailing out of the BVI was excellent. Some of the things were out of our control and us just being lucky. The 45 ft. catamaran, Knotty Toddy, crewed by Capt. Richard and Chef Shelly (Birdie) were selected for us (we picked the size and kind of boat). They were the best crew, I don’t think anyone could have been better. Richard planned and delivered a wonderful itinerary based on what we wanted. Shelly prepared amazing meals and was a charming hostess the entire sailing. She must be part wizard to get so much out of that small galley.
The other thing that was amazing was the weather and sailing conditions. We got lucky there (we did pick the dates of our sailing).
Glad we did:
White Bay Beach Day with visit to the Soggy Dollar, Cane Garden Bay, sailing and snorkeling around Virgin Gorda, sightseeing drive around the north end of Virgin Gorda by taxi, the Baths (visit Mad Dog Bar), the view from Hog’s Heaven Bar Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock Resort
Takeaways:
When speaking to the Moorings reservation representatives, ask a lot of questions. The Moorings have a large data base of information they can send you if you ask them.
Talk to your pre-departure concierge as soon as you can, they will help you a lot. Our concierge was Paul Patterson and he as excellent.
If a crewed sailing, be clear on your preference sheet on you likes and wants (remember space is limited on these boats), let your captain know what you want to do. Do not over plan, sometimes conditions dictate.
Yes, we most definitely do it again!
Trip was excellent. The boat was virtually brand new. We took a catamaran with skipper & chef, which I thought was an excellent choice to make it a truly relaxing vacation. The crew was very professional and the food was amazing, to the point where we ended up doing almost all meals on the boat. Everything is organized to make it esy and straightforward. It was a vacation we will not forget.
We just finished our week-long cruise with Andy and Linzi in the BVI. What an amazing and fun experience we had! We were a group of 8 guests and we fit comfortably on the boat. The boat was lovely, clean, and well-appointed. Andy and Linzi had everything we needed and more!
Andy was an extremely knowledgeable captain. He knew all about the boat itself, the technical aspects of yachting, and all about the BVI. He did a combination of sailing and motor yachting during our trip. Andy is also very safety-oriented while simultaneously understanding we are there to let loose, have fun, and enjoy our vacation. It made it much easier to relax knowing that someone responsible and friendly was managing everything. Both Andy and Linzi had good tips and suggestions for us during our trip and knew the must-see places, must-eat foods, and must-drink bars.
Linzi’s food was INCREDIBLE. We had some meals outside of the boat where we honestly would have preferred to eat Linzi’s food. I really loved our daily happy hour events where she would make little snacks which were all so delicious. Snacks were also served with a custom and refreshing cocktail every day. Linzi was also an exceptional first mate who was very skilled with helping Andy moor the boat.
Both of them were friendly, funny, and professional. Lots of laughs and good times were had. I’m so glad we had them as our lively crew and would strongly recommend them to everyone!
