Deni Gašparin

Captain/Skipper

Captain Deni grew up in continental Croatia – Zagreb. A restless spirit with an early passion for travel, he went to the US to study Psychology and Sociology and then worked in US, Portugal, and Bulgaria. Upon return to Croatia, he attended Skipper’s Academy and has stuck with sailing ever since – first as the flotilla skipper for 3 years, then advancing to Skippered and Crewed charter. According to his own words – the best part about being onboard the whole time is the freedom to be in various places in a small space of time. As captain, he has to adapt and calculate the guests’ wishes, wind, and weather conditions, so it is always a challenge maintaining a balance, so there is never a dull moment while on the water. Besides sailing, Deni enjoys staying active by lifting weights, calisthenics, skateboarding, surfing, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, freediving, swimming, biking and sometimes running.

Hi, I’m Deni. I’ve been a professional captain since 2016, with over seven seasons of experience sailing across the Mediterranean and Caribbean. I’ve worked with Sunsail and The Moorings as a Flotilla Skipper, Bareboat Captain, and Crewed Charter Captain—roles that have shaped my approach to safety, seamless sailing, and warm, personalized service.

Before returning to Croatia, I spent several years living in the United States, where I earned a university scholarship thanks to my background in competitive swimming. That time abroad gave me a broader perspective and a deep appreciation for different cultures—but the Adriatic always called me home.

With a degree in psychology and sociology, I love connecting with people and creating a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere on board. Whether we’re exploring hidden coves or sharing stories under the stars, my goal is simple: to make your charter experience smooth, memorable, and uniquely yours.

Top Tips For Exploring Agana

  • “Once you get on the boat, relax and let us do the rest”

Favorite Bar & Restaurant

  • “As a crewed captain I am spoiled by my chef every day – but when we do get on land I love going for those laid-back well-hidden restaurants with huge grills. It is impossible to have that sized wooden grill on our boat, so I enjoy it when we are offboard. I also like the more busy towns where one can lose himself in the hustle and bustle of visitors and locals, so places like Lola’s on Vis island, or Toto’s in Vinogradišće is an atmosphere that suites a busy lively summer night.”

Favorite Hidden Gem To Visit

  • “Croatian coast has so many different places to visit that even after years of sailing the area I still find hidden gems every season. This year it was probably the south side of Vis island. If timed right – Stiniva bay has a great amount of calmness and business, and some really great history with its beach and bar. The hidden gem bit is just around the corner, where only experienced captains will know to tie up the yacht for the night, right in the middle of turquoise water and surrounded with lovely caves to snorkel.”

Favourite Part of Your Role

  • “For me, it’s all about creating moments that guests will carry with them long after they leave the boat. Whether it’s a quiet sunrise over the water, a shared laugh during dinner, or the thrill of discovering a hidden cove, I love knowing that I’ve helped shape an experience that feels personal, joyful, and unforgettable. Making sure guests have a great time isn’t just my job—it’s what I genuinely love to do.”

We just finished a week-long charter with Aleks and Deni on Clem Calije, the Mooring’s 50-foot sailing catamaran in Croatia. We were two families, 4 adults and 3 young adults. The trip far exceeded our expectations! Captain Deni and Chef Aleks are a great team.

Deni had an itinerary in mind but once he got to know our interests and adventure levels, he adjusted it real-time to always keep us entertained. He enjoyed explaining some of the more technical aspects of the sailing catamaran and boating customs in the area. He even let us help when we wanted to!

Rockstar Chef Aleks was amazing! She always had food and drinks available for us. She also adjusted to our adventure levels – trying many new dishes on us (which were all fantastic)! At home, my daughter even attempted to replicate one of her desserts! Aleks was always busy preparing our next meal but found some time to befriend the kids. Both her and Deni had a great sense of humor and would laugh and join in conversation with us!

The boat was very roomy for our 7 guests + crew. It was very well maintained and cared for. They had 2 SUPs and a sea kayak which Deni was quick to put in and take out as often as we wanted. The Agana base was very friendly and accommodating and had a waiting area for us, complete with drinks. The base was very responsive to my many questions.

I would highly recommend joining them on a Croatian adventure. We went in late May when the crowds were light and the weather was pleasant. The water was just warm enough to swim in.

Best trip ever! Very knowledgeable Captain who was fun too. The chef was great and her food was fabulous! Took us to some places we would never have known about through the guide books.

Aleksandra Barbu

Chef

Chef Aleksandra is a kind and gentle person, always trying her best. She originally graduated from trade school, then moved into the insurance industry. At this time, she was also involved in her family business where she gained experience within the bar, making cocktails and serving delicious food. She then joined the Moorings sister company, where she worked as a flotilla hostess for 5 seasons. During this time she was responsible for booking restaurants, organizing ports, excursions, medical care, wine tasting, sightseeing, and all other duties to make sure the guests were taken care of and had a good charter. She has now progressed to a position with The Moorings and looks forward to showing guests a unique but amazing experience on the water.

Hi, I’m Aleksandra! I grew up in a small town just outside Croatia’s capital, and for the past six years I’ve been lucky to call the sea my workplace.

I started my journey with The Moorings as a stewardess and chef, and although I briefly explored a career in banking, I quickly realized my heart belongs on the water—with good food and great company. I trained at the SKMER Culinary School in Split under Chef Neven Bremec, where I deepened my love for Croatian and Mediterranean cuisine. I especially enjoy creating sweet treats that bring smiles to our guests. For me, cooking isn’t just about flavour—it’s about creating moments people remember.

When I’m not onboard, you’ll find me volunteering at animal shelters or spending time with my cats. I love making guests feel at home and sharing the beauty of our coast through delicious meals and heartfelt hospitality..

Top Tips For Exploring Agana

  • “My top tip? Use your two dinners ashore wisely! This is your chance to try peka—a traditional Croatian dish slow-cooked under a bell in hot coals. It’s something we can’t prepare on the boat, but it’s an absolute must-try for anyone who wants to taste real Dalmatian flavour. And while you’re at it, don’t miss out on a local wine tasting. Many of our islands have small family-run wineries with beautiful views and even better stories. It’s the perfect way to experience the culture—one glass at a time.”

Favorite Bar & Restaurant

  • “Marina is a lovely little town, and after a busy turnaround day, nothing beats a quiet escape to the other side of the bay. There’s a beach bar called Terapija—which fittingly means “therapy”—and it’s exactly that. Cold drinks, laid-back vibes, and a view that reminds you why we do this job. It’s my go-to spot to unwind, catch up with fellow crew, and enjoy a moment of peace before the next adventure begins. No frills, just good energy and the sound of the sea.”

Favorite Hidden Gem To Visit

  • “I absolutely adore Korčula Island—especially Korčula town. It’s like stepping into a living postcard: ancient stone walls, winding alleys, and a rich history that you can feel in every corner. The town has this perfect mix of elegance and energy, especially in summer when the buzz kicks in. The archipelago around it is stunning too—tiny islets, quiet bays, and crystal-clear water that’s just begging for a swim. It’s one of those places where you can explore all day and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface. For me, Korčula is pure magic.”

Favourite Part of Your Role

  • “Empty plates. That’s my love language. When guests ask for seconds—or even thirds—I know I’ve done my job right. There’s something so satisfying about seeing people truly enjoy a meal you’ve prepared, especially when it’s made with care and local ingredients. I’m always trying to create something that feels comforting but also a little surprising. And if I hear, “Can I have the recipe?” or “Is there more?”—well, that’s the best compliment I could ask for.”
