Time of year

The best time to sail The Bahamas  is between December and April, when temperatures are slightly cooler and conditions feel particularly comfortable for sailing. This period tends to see the highest demand, which is reflected in pricing across all charter types.

Outside of these months, you may find more availability, allowing you the space to enjoy warm weather and excellent sailing conditions – a discerning choice for those who value tranquility and exclusivity.

Type of yacht

Our award-winning yachts are designed for comfortable living onboard, with shaded outdoor areas, practical layouts and space that works well for longer days between anchorages. The type of yacht you choose will shape both your overall experience and the starting cost of your Bahamas yacht charter.

As a guide, for a 7 day Exumas bareboat charter for 2 people:

Your final cost will depend on the specific yacht you select, along with availability and travel dates, but choosing the right type of yacht is one of the biggest factors in shaping both your charter experience and your budget.

What additional Bahamas yacht charter costs do you need to factor in?

As a general guide, many travelers allow an additional 25 to 50% on top of the initial charter price to cover living and operational costs. The exact amount will depend on your itinerary, the type of charter you choose, and how you plan to spend your time on and off the water.

Living and operational costs in The Bahamas include:

  1. Flights and airport transfers
  2. Local taxes and mooring fees
  3. Provisioning
  4. Fuel
  5. Gratuity
  6. Itinerary
  7. Optional charter extras

Flights and airport transfers

Flight prices will vary depending on where you are traveling from and the time of year, but routes from the US often range between $300 and $600 per person for a round trip.

Once you arrive, transfers to the base are usually quick, with taxis readily available and typically costing around $20.

Local taxes and mooring fees

Mooring in The Bahamas is more flexible than in destinations with fixed mooring systems, which means you will often anchor for free in protected bays.

However, if you plan to stay in marinas or use mooring balls, you will need to budget for nightly fees. These typically range from around $20-$30 for mooring balls and $30-$100 at marinas, depending on the size of your yacht.

For further information, our Abacos Travel Information page, and Exumas Travel Information page, have more details on fees and taxes.

Provisioning

Provisioning is one of the most consistent daily costs during your charter and can vary depending on your preferences.

For bareboat, power and skippered charters, you will need to supply all food and drinks for your group. As a general rule, you should aim to allocate between $50-75 per person per day for provisioning, which will ensure everyone has plenty of meals, snacks and drinks.

If you’re booking an all-inclusive crewed charter, provisioning is included in the price.

It’s worth noting that food costs can often be more expensive in The Bahamas than other sailing destinations, as many food items are imported.

Fuel

When you charter a sailing yacht in The Bahamas with The Moorings, we start you off on your trip with a full tank of fuel, and you’re not required to refuel before coming back to base*.

*Not including Power charters, where guests are required to refuel.

Gratuity

A gratuity is expected and is typically given to the skipper or crew at the end of the charter. The amount is entirely at your discretion.

For crewed charters, recognizing the outstanding quality of service during your all-inclusive sailing holiday, a gratuity of 15-20% of the overall charter price is suggested.

Itinerary

Your itinerary will influence how much you spend during your time in The Bahamas.

While many anchorages and attractions can be enjoyed at no cost, activities such as guided tours, Bahamas diving trips, or dining at popular waterfront restaurants will add to your daily spend.

*Please note: diving can be experienced in all our destinations. It is recommended to dive through reputable, certified 3rd party dive operators using their boats and equipment. Diving is only permitted from our yachts on bareboat charters, at guests’ own risk, when no staff (crew, skippers) are onboard.
