BVI Yacht Charter FAQs

What is the best route to sail the BVI?

At The Moorings, our BVI sailing itinerary starts in Tortola and takes you to the BVI’s must-see places! Starting at Cooper Island, our route will guide you around Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Trellis Bay, Great Harbour and The Bight.

Our BVI itinerary blends the best of both worlds: secluded anchorages and beautiful sunsets, with a bit of laid-back fun partying in the beachside bars, meaning there’s something for everyone! Explore the best places to sail in the BVI.

How easy is it to island hop in the BVI?

It truly couldn’t be easier to navigate your way around the BVI and explore its magnificent islands. Whether you’re staying for 1 week or longer, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the BVI’s main islands and discover their hidden gems.

On your BVI yacht charter, you can spend days relaxing on the golden sands and snorkeling in the turquoise waters, whilst still having enough time to sail around the islands and moor up to explore!

How many days in the BVI is enough?

It depends on how much of the British Virgin Islands you want to explore during your idyllic yacht charter as to how many days is enough. If you want to uncover the treasures of each of the BVI’s main islands, you may choose to book for longer than if you’re planning on staying mostly within the Sir Francis Drake Channel for most of your charter.

We think a week is a great amount of time to sail around the BVI because you have plenty of time to relax and unwind, while also being able to enjoy the adventure of visiting different islands.

What are the best things to do in the BVI?
  • Visit the white-sand beaches of Jost Van Dyke and enjoy a Painkiller cocktail at the world-famous Soggy Dollar Bar.
  • Navigate the labyrinth of natural rock formations at The Baths national park.
  • Snorkel the unique underwater features off Norman Island at the Indians or the Caves.
  • Enjoy fresh-caught lobster at the edge of the world with a beachfront dinner in Anegada.
  • Spend time in North Sound, Virgin Gorda, home to signature ports of call such as the Bitter End Yacht Club, Leverick Bay Resort & Marina, Saba Rock, and Oil Nut Bay.
  • Uncover hidden coves and breathtaking marine life as you go scuba diving or snorkeling in the BVI. The Moorings dive partner, Sail Caribbean Divers is a PADI 5-star dive company in the British Virgin Islands and is located at our base. They offer rendezvous excursions to any one of the BVI 73 official dive sites, as well as equipment rentals, instructional courses and more.

BVI expert and Commercial Operations Manager, Mark Figgins says: “While the famous places like Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke are known world-wide, there is nothing like jumping into its shining water, dollar bills in hand, and walking up to the bar dripping in line as you proudly exchange them for a painkiller. Some things are a must.

“Others, however, remain off the beaten path and offer an authentic glimpse of island life beyond the crowds. A visit to Callwood rum distillery, for example, is a special way to learn about the island’s history while you taste the products of the land. From there, tuck into a table at the aptly named Indigo Beach House at Cane Garden Bay, and you spend the day discovering a part of the BVI that many travelers miss.

“As you travel through the BVI keep in mind that some gems are hidden just above the crowds. On Norman Island, while most charters rightfully include a visit to the Willy T and Pirate’s Bight, few know to go ashore in the cool and quiet of the morning for a hike. Breathtaking views all along the way eventually lead to a quiet beach off limits to charter boats. In the calm waters you might catch a glimpse of a sea turtle enjoying these protected shores”.

If you plan on spending hours in the crystal clear waters of the BVI, take a look at our water sports options to see which water toys may be available to you during your BVI yacht charter.

When is the best time to sail in the BVI?

You’ll be pleased to know that the BVI has fantastic sailing conditions all year-around, making it a brilliant place to enjoy a relaxing yacht charter. Like our other Caribbean destinations, the BVI is a beautiful place to escape the cold Winter weather and chase the Winter sun! For alternative winter sun sailing destinations, explore our ‘Where to sail in December‘ guide.

The high season in the BVI is considered to be between December-April, where you’ll experience sunny weather, warm waters and incredible sailing conditions. If you’re considering an unforgettable sailing trip, April is one of the best months to experience the BVI at its finest.

Why charter a yacht in the BVI

Location may not be everything but in the British Virgin Islands, it’s what makes cruising so pleasurable. With its stretch of islands in the northeastern part of the Caribbean, charter guests can expect beautiful blue waters flowing into shaded caves and onto soft-sand beaches. Whether you’re on a romantic vacation, family adventure or celebrating something special like a birthday, when you cast off from our base in Tortola, you’ll be saying hello to true paradise.

For the explorers among us, coral reefs surround the coast in an array of colors and are home to just as colorful marine life. The coral atoll of Anegada is the resting point of many a sunken ship and offers amazing underwater views for diving.

Mark says: “Bring your snorkel gear along and head for Loblolly Beach. The coral heads are so close to the shoreline, you simply walk into the water, and immediately the show begins. You can snorkel for a few minutes or all day, never tiring of the marine life and clear turquoise waters”.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back vacation, further inland bars, shops and restaurants spill through the winding streets and timeless villages are filled with the famous island ambiance. No matter your idea of a good time, a BVI sailing vacation has something for everyone.

The BVI is also one of the best places to enjoy a sailing vacation if you’re a fan of history. With inhabitants settling as far back as 2,300 years, the history of the BVI features pirates, Dutch settlers and hurricanes. There are plenty of places to soak up history on our BVI itinerary, including the ruins of St Michael’s Church and Fort Charlotte.

We truly couldn’t think of a better place to set sail. Sounds like a dream to you? Build your quote today and chart your own destiny!

What Our Guests Are Saying

We recently completed a 7‑day catamaran charter with Moorings in the BVI, and the experience was exceptional. The trip was seamless, relaxing, and truly memorable — largely due to our outstanding captain, Sebastian Verite.

Sebastian prioritized safety, consistently secured prime anchorage locations, assisted with dinner reservations, and guided us to unique spots well beyond the typical itinerary. His professionalism, local knowledge, and warm personality elevated the entire charter.

If you’re looking for a top‑tier captain for your next BVI charter, I wholeheartedly recommend requesting Sebastian. He works with multiple charter companies in the region and is simply outstanding.

Wow!! What an incredible trip!! Just got back from a 7 day crewed charter of the BVI. We were a party of 8 (4 couples) and we were lucky to have Romano and Silvia as our crew. They were so helpful and accommodating! We were treated so well, especially with Silvia’s delicious homemade meals and Romano’s special drinks! We had the best time!!! Thank you for everything!!

We planned this trip well in advance, as this was our 39th year of our “adventure club” – 4 professionals (MDs and Ph.Ds) getting together once a year to do something “adventurous”. The weather was perfect, the water was smooth, and the sailing was fine. We hit 5 islands in five days and mostly used the Boaty balls for overnight. I planned the meals and ordered the food items (except meat), and the boat was stocked when we checked in. The Moorings people were really great and we would definitely do this again!

This was my first charter so I don’t have anything to compare to, but Romano and Silvia made us feel at home in their home. I think we had a typical route with stops at Norman Island, Peter Island, Copper Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

My favorite island was Anegada where we rented Mokes, ate lobster, stopped at some great beach bars, then went snorkeling along the reef.

Other highlights were The Baths, Bitter End and Saba Rock, I had a Painkiller at every bar, including Soggy Dollar.

We chartered a 4200 Catamaran out of the Moorings base in Tortola. This was our 27th sailing trip through the Moorings, and as has been our experience in the past, everything was A+. The boat was well prepared, provisioned, and ready for Charter. We would not consider chartering with anyone else. Additionally, Boatyball has my highest rating of taking care of their sailors. A great combination, and we have already booked our 28th trip for next spring.
